Yep those are die cracks....possibly a Retained Cud or two http://cuds-on-coins.com/shield-nickel-rcd/ you might contact BJ Neff on there to see if he would like pictures of your nickel.

It's almost impossible to find Shield nickels WITHOUT die cracks.

While I do see one die crack going into the rim, there seems to be no other. To be a Retained Cud, a continuous die crack must go from rim to rim to be classified as a die break.

It has a couple nice hub breaks on the reverse as well, top of the D and first S in STATES.
