Hi, I have this very worn Draped Bust Large Cent with an unreadable date, however there is a prominent die crack through the 1/100. Can anyone tell me if the error is identifiable to a specific year?

Hi, Thanks for a quick reply. I suspect a 179?, but if the die crack can be attributed to a 1799 reverse, whoo hoo!

Welp, this is the part where I, and many other novice collectors, hit a dead wall. There is a book about large cent die varieties, but it is expensive. As far as 3 hours of web searching (for an earlier project), there is no website with die varieties for large cents.

That is 1798 S-166, which is a R1.

Thank you for the ID. An R1 indicates a most common type, correct?

Yes, R1 refers to a common die pairing in regards to rarity.
