Geta was murdered by his brother Caracalla in 211 shortly after the campaign against the Britons ended in 210 at the death of their father Septimivs. This AE As contains BRIT in the legend to signify the early successes of that campaign, and would have been included on coins of Geta for only a short time before his death. While not the prettiest specimen, they are not all that common with this legend. I believed this to be RIC 175a. A nice tie in with my Roman Britain themed collection.

A bit corroded but the Severans are so darn difficult to get in this denomination !
I was fortunate to snag one off ebay around 15 years ago. The prices then were quite depressed as the market was flooded for a brief few years by coins coming in from the Balkans. Those were the days !

Whenever I find a Geta in either the as or sestertius I try and follow it .....
Every once in a great while you can get lucky (that means under $100).

Now we need to find you a Caracalla to pair with it !

Congrats on the fine addition to your Roman Britain collection...a coin imbued with some interesting history.

It's a keeper, not a bad coin with an interesting history.

There are some books that emphasize coins of Roman Britain.
"Roman Coinage in Britain," by P.J. Casey, Shire Archaeology, which was very inexpensive ($3.50 used in the US on Amazon, less in England)
"Coinage in Roman Britain", by Richard Reece. Seaby Books. (Amazingly, there is now one copy at $2.67 in the US on Amazon--buy it! It's a $20 book)
"The Coinage of Roman Britain", by Gilbert Askew, is too old and has no photos, only line drawings.
Casey also wrote, "Understanding Ancient Coins" which is an introduction with more about Britain than anywhere else. (one copy at $4.99)
"Coins and the Archaeologist" edited by John Casey and Richard Reece has articles emphasizing finds in Roman Britain and the best (by far, and well-illustrated) article on ancient counterfeits. (none below $66 in the US, but one in England cheaper.)

I have two references specifically on Roman Britain coinage. "A History of Roman Coinage in Britain" by Sam Moorhead and "The London Mint of Constantius & Constantine" by Hubert Cloke & Lee Toone.
