Hey, congratulations! I know this is an important milestone for a number of collectors of Romans. Seems like there should be a signal every time a 12 Caesars set is completed somewhere in the world...fireworks or maybe a bell ringing on a Christmas tree or something...

Congratulations, that is a milestone for any collector of ancient coins. Was the Caligula the hardest coin to get I know they are very difficult to find and cost a small fortune when they are found.

Thanks to both of you for the kind words.
@echizento Yes, the Caligula was by far the most difficult coin. I actively searched for a few months before this one showed up. Also, yes, it was quite expensive. If I put them in order by difficulty the first would be Caligula, then the Caesar portrait, and then Claudius. The Otho is not even in the top 3. LOL.
I started putting this together in April 2015 when I bought the Otho.

What would be the cheapest price to complete a 12 Caesar collection? I have thought about it for a while but don't want to start if I am looking at many thousands for a single coin.

The cheapest approach would be to pursue them in bronze and copper. You might be able to put together a set for about 800-1000. You would also have to decide if you wanted all imperial portrait coins or if provincials would be acceptable. If you are doing imperial portraits the biggest problem would be Otho for he issued no imperial bronzes. You would have to go with a provincial for him. You might have to search for a while for a bronze Julius Caesar. They are out there but they will not be really cheap. (Cheaper than a portrait denarius but still not inexpensive). The 2 toughest Caesars in silver (Caligula and Claudius) are very available in copper, so they will not be particularly tough. Galba and Vitellius can be a bit pricey depending on what issues you choose.

I started to assemble a portrait set in silver several years ago. Came within three (Caligula, Claudius, Otho) but developed other interests that competed for the money. Still have the coins, but never finished. Oddly, in my case, the portrait Caesar was the first one I got. But those other three in VF and better were out of sight then, and still are. Two of those I have in bronze, but Otho is simply not to be seen in my collection.
