I have always wanted to purchase a nice denarius or sestertius or another type of Antonius Pius. (I loved the book "Word to Caesar" as a kid). I did a look on ebay and there are some pretty obvious fakes on there, even to my totally untrained eye. Any recommendations on buying authentic ancient coins?

Any one of these dealers on Vcoins can be trusted. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/an...Default.aspx

They can all be trusted but I have come to find some are better than others, my particular favourite is Gitbudd and Naumann.

All the dealers are honest but should you have a problem V-coins itself is very decent at chasing the dealers or working as an intermediary to get things resolved. For instance following a postal problem and a dealer who seems reluctant to communicate Zach Beasley (v-cois support) has made an effort to keep me informed what is going on and acts in a timely and courteous manner.

Clearly they care about keeping a reputation for good service and making sure that their collective acts in a professional and honest manner, presumably any dealer not up to scratch would be shown the door.

Thanks for the advice. There are some nice coins on these sites and I have a horrible feeling I will be spending money soon.

An Antoninus Pius sestertius is an excellent choice for someone new to collecting !
They are quite plentiful and varied. Best of all he is one of the few that can still be found in near VF condition for what might be thought of as a reasonable amount of money (i.e. under $100).
For many common types $50 is often enough to buy a very impressive looking coin the has excellent detail and a very pleasing appearance.

While I have my favorite sources I will not bother you with any names. But should you find a candidate........ just ask !
My opinions are free !

And questions are never concidered a bother.

I recently made a new friend at a local coin auction here in Massachusetts. A student from Vietnam. He has just discovered Ancient Greek coins (not my strong area !) and he seems to be selling everything he owns to buy them !
I constantly advise him to be cautious. Outside of the main dealers on Vcoins there are many scoundrels selling 'junk' coins and fakes.

The best thing to do is always think twice ! The coins of AP are plentiful and reasonably priced (excepting Brittania reverses !)
Ask for a second opinion ! People here will gladly do that.

Antoninus Pius is one of my favorite emperors so I have a few coins of him in my collection.

Here is a Sestertius and Denarius I bought a number of years ago. I can't recall what I paid for the sestertius but I know it was well under $200. The denarius I picked up on ebay for under $25.
