I have a really good feeling that this thing has been polished in recent times, but I'd love any other ideas anyone has. It's so shiny and smooth looking, like marble.

No, just a well preserved cent. Unfortunately because you put the palm of your hand on the surface, it won't stay nice for long.

Well, it was in a roll of pennies, so I'm sure I'm not the first.

It just surprises me the amount of shine with the lack of details.

When it comes in a roll titled "pennies", I find it fitting to call it either

The master hub was pretty worn out by the time 1968 arrived... The hub had not been strengthened since 1916, and it wouldn't be until 1969 that the hub would once again become much sharper and clearer. This is why you not the lack of details.

That's a sweet fun fact! So, I'm guessing it's worth keeping?

It's worth keeping. BUT you should realize that taking a picture of any copper coin in the palm of your sweaty hand is about the single most offensive thing you can show most copper collectors. At the very least, hold the coin by the edges.

I have a bunch of 1968 pennies with similar finishes from roll hunting, they are actually pretty common. I wonder if there were a bunch let into the wild after being stuck in a vault for a couple decades?
