As I mentioned in a previous post, and indicated by my avatar and login name, I would like to get into collecting Indian cents.

In doing so, I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers in how to care for and preserve copper coins and if there are any differences compared to other metals.

Thanks

copper is considered an active metal, meaning that is very sensitive to environmental conditions such as moisture, atmospheric salts & acids and even oils from your hands. copper coins should only be handled while wearing clean, soft cotton gloves to prevent that nice "mint state red" from turning brown, even the moisture from your breath can leave behind dark spots over time. Try to keep your better coins in air-tight holders to prevent environmental damage. Also the use of desiccant to reduce the humidity of your storage container will help if you live in an area where the humidity is high.

I like to use 2x2s or 1 1/2x1 1/2s for storing my better cents. The Airtites are great and should be used for all high value coins. I have several semi-key Lincoln Wheaties that I keep in 2x2s.

Of course, always handle your coins by the edges and as mentioned, wear cotton gloves as much as possible. I'm going to buy a can of compressed air to blow off my coins also.

Is compressed air safe for the coins? Is there any chance of moisture being in the compressed air cans? Or the propellant having corrosive properties?
