I've never bought any coins on ebay, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips on what to look out for. I've seen alot of coins I like there, and just want to know if there are any that I should not trust. thanks for your help

1) Get good pics, big pics. Never buy a coin without pics.
2) Make sure they have a return policy. What are the costs associated with it?
3) Be sure you factor shipping costs into the equation.
4) Always read a sellers feedback. Less than 98% positive feedback will usually keep me from bidding (Use https://www.toolhaus.org to check up on sellers)
5) I only use Paylpal to pay because if something goes wrong, they'll intervene.
6) Always snipe or at least bid at the last possible minute. That way other bidders can't reconsider their bid.

Snowman makes several good points. I'd like to add something on Third Party Graded ( TPG slabbed) coins.

TPG varies tremendously. I recently purchased an 1830s capped bust half dollar for $318.00 that was graded by a "generic" TPG service at MS62. When the coin arrived it was a cleaned, VF-20 at best; probably worth about $40.00.

I returned it and only lost the $4.95 S&H plus $2.00 return postage, but it was a disappointing lesson. I'd only trust slabbed coins from PCGS, NGC (or NCS), ICG, ANACS.

Also, avoid "Auction Fever" and bidding wars. They can bite even a smart collector.

Good Luck!

We also have a lot of good info, including a buyers/sellers list in this section: Ebay Auction Site Forum.

You can always post pictures of the coins in question in the grading section to get peoples thoughts.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. Lot's of knowledge around here.

Good points from both. I also look for any phrase that says 'stock photo.' Make sure the photo is of the coin you will actually receive.
