With the current popularity of Lincolns with 09 coming around, do you think now is a bad time to be buying these? My set needs pretty much everything from 1940 down to 1909, with a few holes filled here and there. I'm working on mostly MS coins, down to the xf/au range. I just sometimes question myself. Always thinking maybe I should start another set, one less popular at the moment and let the Lincoln craze calm down? I mean, I'm not buying to re-sell, so buying at the current price to sell in 09 is not what I'm after. What are your thoughts? Buy now because the price may never go back down? Have the prices jumped that much? I kinda have my hands in the air wondering what to do.

I agree, the prices are up right now and will continue to be for a while after 2009. I thnik that once the Statehood Quarters are done and the 2009 cents are done things should start to settle down and prices will stabilize.

I have the same dilemma. I think both options are correct. Some of the key dates will see a jump that never recedes and some of the more common coins will come right back to where they are. I may be wrong (heck I probably am), but that is how I am tackling it. I just bought the 09S VDB and I am getting the 13-s and then I am going to go back to Shield nickels and Barber halves. Good luck.

Your key dates are going to cost you for AU/MS grade.

Work on the set as the occasion and deal on the prices happen ,,never let a good buy go by .
just add a page to your pocket note book on what your looking for and keep it handy as you shop for other coins .

Absolutely. In AU/MS state, prices more than likely will never be much cheaper--You might save a few bucks, but a MS-63 1909S vdb will never be found at $100, even $1000 is not likely. Key dates in mint shape generally don't fall, they continuely go up and up and up. However, let's say a 1927-S in MS does have the potential to drop enough where you might want to wait a few years. While expensive, a MS-62 1927S will not climb to the $500 range in our lifetime, it has a better chance of dropping below the $100 mark in say 3 or 4 years. Basically, I would go for the Key/semi-keys now (if you can afford) and pick up some junk-grade for the others for now. Give the 1938-D and the 1923 two years or so and they will, probably, be slighty more reasonably. Just me opinion of course --gary

Thanks for all the input. Most of my 35 and older coins will not be MS/AU, but its a goal to shoot toward. I'm more after a nice looking set, not mix matched etc...Anyways, I do have a spreadsheet that BadThad had posted before, its up to date with what I have and what I need. I'll take that with me wherever I go. I think i'll continue my venture with getting everything but keys, since I cannot afford. I'll probably slow down and only buy the 35 and olders at shows/dealers so I can for sure find the right one, instead of ebay'n. I might just have that itch to start a new set, expand my collection :) Slow down in one set, start another...I'm hooked for life lol.

lol creaton, I know the feeling.
Even though I said go for the keys, thats not what I did. I would love to, but at this point in my life there are more important things than $3000 pennies--i.e. food! hah I say go for nickel rolls--while their easy to come by at any bank, it can be very challenging, and fun to try and find those precious Six Steps. While doing that, try and save some money up to make a grab at some Key Lincolns. That's my plan, though its not always so easy to stick to :)

Bad part is, the new sets i'd like to start are probably more expensive lol. Mercury, Walkers to name a couple. Not really interested in Jefferson's just yet.
Definitely not an option to buy keys right now either. Just dropped $500 on truck repairs, plus were saving for a house, you get the idea :D

I'm with you creaton. I think I'm a little further along (almost complete from 1933-1958 with a number of pre-1933), but I'll probably go until I only have the big keys missing and then switch to something new. I'd like that when I'm ready to spend the money on the missing keys, that they won't have increased beyond my price range.

My suggestion is if you like Lincoln Cents best buy or find what you can while you can. It is not just the 2009 craze coming up but one more thing. POPULATION. The present population of the USA is now over 300,000,000. Due to the nemerous types of coins being produced by our Mint the amount of coin collectors has risen dramatically. Regardless of how much the latest collecting craze slows down, it will not help with the lack of coins made with a mintage of only a few million. Note that even cents with a mintage of 10 or 15 million will soon be rare. If there are 10 or 15 million people in the US collecting them, many millions in other countries after them, your chances of finding many coins is getting less and less eaach day. In the next several years if the population explosion continues there will be over 400,000,000 people in the USA and many, many collecting cents.
