If you spend one hour flipping burgers; you can earn more than CRH nowadays. Moreover, CRH could be more exhausting than working. Going through garage sales might be much more rewarding now.

To me, a bad day CRH'ing is better than a good day working.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Quit CRHing then. Less competition, more coins for us!

I still hunt half dollars because of the silver. So far, I have made $10 in 3 months.

Eh in my 36 or so boxes I have found just over 11 oz worth of silver coins. Each box only takes about 30 minutes a week so 11oz x avg of $15 spot ÷ 18 hours comes out to just over $9 an hour. Not too shabby IMO ;)

@Kairu, I am impressed by your $9 per hour efficiency. 30 min per box, that's quite intensive work

I gave up CRH'ing, just after Australia's switch to decimal currency in 1966. About 30 years ago, I started trolling through dealers' junk boxes instead, in the up to $5 range. With inflation, the junk box value per item is now in the $4 to $20 range. The dealers that I dealt with then, I still deal with now, and I have retained a 30 year personal friendship with them. I have met lot of other collector friends along the way as well, much as you would as members of a coin club. As you would expect, some of those early pickups are worth well over $100 each these days. I would estimate that about 1,000 coins in my collection have been from this type of coin hunting. I always come home with one or two pieces.

Obsolescence is in effect so finds will diminish over time. Some are on a faster track (LWCs, IHCs, V nickels...about anything old, silver) and some on slower tracks ( LMC varieties, modern AU/BU coins). Folks with narrower interests normally feel the effects sooner than others who have broader interests. As for CRH as a part time job, I can't imagine it being feasible without refined processes and equipment. I don't know why folks compare it to a part time job either. Does anyone here at CCF do CRH as a job?

Yeah and I forgot to mention even at half that amount or less, its nice because it is relaxing and enjoyable to do while watching TV. It goes quick for me due to only looking for silver/proofs and at the start of next year, 2016 coinage to keep updated :)

This is the same to me as it was collecting baseball and basketball cards and continuing to buy packs to find the elusive insert or autographed card. I got into this purely as a hobby. Each hobby cost time and money whether it be fishing, collecting rocks, bottle caps or panties. Yes some are more exciting than others of course but if one likes collecting coins for the pure excitement of finding a silver coin or filling a hole in ones album so be it. Its only a hobby nothing more.

Quote: Each box only takes about 30 minutes a week............. If you are spending that little of time searching halves you may be missing much more valuable coins such as a 1972-D no FG like the one I found this past summer.

Yeah I have never been too interested in errors/varieties, and if I knew this no fg was worth hundreds of dollars I would spend more time on it :P
