Help please

Can anyone direct me back to the threads that described the methodology of weighing $10 rolls of half dollar to determine the possibility of any silver coins inside?

From memory a single 90% coin would "SHOW" well enough on the scales.

Same for two 40% ers. Seems zero silver was equally detectable.

Also need good advice on a brand name, sensitivity and MAX gram size of scales for $10 ROLLs. What is a good price to pay for scales? All other info welcome. :) :)

Thanks, Domain555

In theory, it could be done by taking the measured weight of the coin, subtracting the weight of the wrapper, and dividing by 20. If it comes out within a fraction of a gram for a clad half, it probably does not contain silver. The higher the average weight, the higher the chance of silver.

Of course that is in *theory*. In reality, most rolls have 0-1 40% half, and are also likely to contain a large number of worn out slot machine halves. These can be worn to the extent that they would bring a silver down to average weight, thus creating a false negative.

If you want to approach it scientifically, you could make an excel file to do the basic math for you. Weigh and record every roll to get the coin average weight, then open it and record the number of heavily worn coins, the number of holed coins, the amount of extra stuff (e.g. gum) in the roll, and the number of silvers. Do this for a few boxes, and you might have enough data to determine in a general sense if this is a reliable hunting method.

Also as far as scales go, any > $15 scale off of Amazon with a capacity of at least 500g and d=0.01g should be good enough. I bought a SmartWeigh for $8 but it only has a 100g capacity... good for single coins but not for rolls.

If I ever get around to getting my first box of half dollars this will help to "SEE" if one roll may have AG in it with out opening it.
