Hi
I know you all probably get so tired of replying to DDO's and DDR's.

I have a couple pics here and since I still haven't gained the "eye" for figuring out which is Doubled Die and which is MD, so can you help me out please?

To me it looks like a worn die,not a DDO or a DDR or MD.

Be sure to check out these sites for listings first when you suspect you have a double die. They might also help train your eye. You are always welcome to post still if you want to verify though :D

Another trick to determining double dies: open posts by other people here in the forum and before you scroll down to the responses, judge for yourself (machine damage/die deterioration/double die). It took me a while but that helped. Quick tip:
Machine Damage: The letters are the same size as a normal letter, additionally the "doubling" is lower/shelf like
Die Deterioration: Check for heavy cleaning marks (these can look like die cracks or tiny scratches), worn out design with little sign of circulation, VLDS (picture below for what vlds can do to a coin)
Double Die: Fatter design than a normal coin, split letters and/or split serifs.

VLDS (Very Late Die State) [Notice the filled/fat letters, the frosty glaze seen near the letters and missing detail on Jefferson's head]:

Last Tip: Include the date and mint mark of the coin in question on your posts. This one isn't pictured and is not in the title or body of the post.

1983 - Sorry I forgot to put it on the pics. Here is an image of the full coin.

I appreciate the explanations on the types of doubling. I have added that info to my collection of notes. I get so much great information here on the forum.

I enjoy reading and learning from the other posts - I look at the pictures like you mentioned, it is a great way to get answers without posting my own. It was from another post earlier this week where I learned of the Cud website so when I was looking through this website I discovered what die chips and die cracks were. Yesterday, it showed a unique crack on the 1983 penny so I got out all my 1983 pennies and started looking for this unique die crack.

I don't think I'll ever get the real Doubled Die, but looking for all these specialty things with Cuds, cracks, lamination, clashes - this is the really cool stuff to find.

Unfortunately I can't get a good clear view of the serif's between my vision and probably not having a good enough magnifier. I just can't see if they are split.

Such fun.

Thanks again for all your help.
