(I'm not sure which image is upright. The image optimizer web site and my computer disagree about which is the top of the image.) Report this Post to the Staff

Alan Pillar of the Community Canada 1463 Posts	Posted 12/05/2015 6:43 pm That I believe is from vigorous die polishing. It's a certainty others exist since it was done to the die. There's something to find to make a pair/mate! IMO it is not damage to the coin. Finding another on the ebay would prove it. I'll keep my peepers open! Report this Post to the Staff
bjherbison Valued Member United States 257 Posts	Posted 12/06/2015 09:09 am With that split opinion I decided to pull out my scope and take the closest shot I could (just under the chin). Same focus for the two images, just different light sources. The surface is smooth, something I didn't appreciate. When the camera was further away I could get a good image of the camera from it's reflection. (Upon reflection, I wish I had captured that image.) Report this Post to the Staff
Alan Pillar of the Community Canada 1463 Posts	Posted 12/06/2015 11:44 am Yes, that's heavy die polishing around the portrait. You will notice the silhouette is slightly raised, the obverse die was getting old so the die worker polished the heck out of it rather than pressing a new die. They should have pressed a new die.
