Hello, I was just going through some things I haven't seen in a while and remembered I never sought an answer for this item. It is an 1855 $1 gold coin and there is some doubling on both sides. Some of the doubling seems to be a bit different than the rest. I hope that the photos are clean enough for you to see. If they aren't I will try to find a new way to take them. I have suffered a few spinal injuries and sometimes shake pretty bad for someone only in their early 30s or for any age to be honest. I was just wondering if any of this is hub doubling or if it is all just Strike Doubling. The "S" is what has really got me a bit confused and is the main reason I need to ask all of you with much more knowledge and expertise than me. Also, if anyone is able to possibly give me a hint at a grade to know whether it is worth sending in to get graded and slabbed. I thank you all in advance and am anxious to read what you all have to say. Thank you very much. I will check back as soon as I can later today as it is time for me to get rest so if I left anything out please let me know and Ill fill in any blanks I can.
thank you

I'm no expert with this issue but according to Breen's book this appears to be the "Open 5" variety.
He notes many minor varieties but didn't get specific.

Guess: Since the doubling appears at the to of the obverse letters my best guess would be a late(r) die state.

Most of what I see is Strike Doubling except for on the U of UNITED, that is Longacre Doubling.

thank you. I'm going to do some much deeper digging to see if there is anything else I shoukd know and to figure out whether I should send in for grading and slab. Don't have more than $75 bucks in it so hopefully It'll be worth it to have it attributed. I'm sure that with my very limited knowledge of everything gold I'm bound to learn a lot just trying to find anything new on this coin and the other 2 I posted recently.

Not sure if you're aware of it, but your gold dollar is a Type 2. This type was only coined from 1854 to 1856 before the designed changed to a larger head of Liberty.

Honestly I did not know about this coin being type 2. As I mentioned I know a particularly small amount about gold coins in comparison to all others and especially the last 60 yes of Ag which are my favorite. After I saw your comment I did a little research and from what I found quickly this coin might actually be in better condition than I have been thinking since I bought it. I found an interesting read about this coin on NV site. Do you possibly know a ballpark grade of this 1855 dollar?

If I were you, I would post a thread in the US classic coin grading forum for a wider audience to chime in with their thoughts on a potential grade.

You can also use PCGS Photograde to help you http://www.PCGS.com/photograde/ scroll down and click on the $1-$3 Gold Coins which will take you to another page showing all the types. Click on the gold dollar above type 2 and it'll bring up high quality photos you can compare yours too.

I don't have much experience grading gold dollars so I could be way off---I'm thinking this is in the high XF to low AU range.
