1856 $1 Gold possible contemporary counterfeit.
Its defanatly a counterfeit its not gold.
The coin has Env damage and real wear on it.
It appears to be a old counterfeit
what I'm trying to figure out is if they made contemporary counterfeits of this coin.
I know some have a good premium on them.

Since selling known counterfeits/forgeries is illegal, I'd recommend you omit that part of the post. :)

I'm not sure how anyone would have been fooled by that coin, 5 years ago or 100 years ago. It wouldn't have passed for long; gold was much more closely examined than silver.

people collect contemporary counterfeits there is a huge difference between a China counterfeit and a contemporary counterfeit

What is a Contemporary Counterfeit?

A coin, usually from a base metal, which was cast or struck from crudely engraved dies or dies made from a host coin from legitimate United States coinage and made to pass for face value at the time of its creation. Modern counterfeits with the COPY labeling or unlabeled Chinese copy artifacts are NOT considered to be Contemporary Counterfeits.

Contemporary Counterfeits are an interesting area of numismatics. While it is illegal to own counterfeit US currency, because it's still legal tender, counterfeits of obsolete currency are sometimes worth more than the actual coin (if they were in circulation when the coin was in circulation and are rarer than the original) and are legal to own.

A contemporary counterfeit is a counterfeit of a coin made during the time of that coin's circulation whose primary purpose, generally, was to pass as spendable money. A modern counterfeit is a counterfeit of a coin made in present day but is usually no longer in circulation, usually for the purpose of defrauding collectors. For example, a Morgan dollar counterfeit made in the late 1800s or early 1900s would be a contemporary counterfeit, as Morgans were being struck and circulated at that time as spendable money. A Morgan dollar counterfeit made today would be a modern counterfeit, as Morgans are no longer in general circulation and are primarily a collector's item. A Sacagawea dollar counterfeit made today would be both a modern counterfeit and a contemporary counterfeit, but with the steady march of time it shall eventually become a contemporary counterfeit, alone.

The lack of wear and poor quality leads me to believe it is probably a modern fake.
