What's the easiest / best way to check authenticity when I have them?

By weighing, or some other way?

The coin looks authentic to me. I have it as a VAM17 based on the mint mark position and die gouges on the eye and in the nostril. Compare to this the link. http://www.vamworld.com/1878-CC+VAM-17

Thanks Dave, very interesting, and that's a weight off my mind. It's certainly a distinctive variant (when you know what to look for).

VF-25 details, cleaned. The 1878 CC is known to have a small CC.

Yup, I reviewed Dave's attribution, and it looks okay to me.

VF details.
