Ricardocody Pillar of the Community United States 1204 Posts	Posted 05/18/2011 2:51 pm Just checked some buffalos I left in vinnegar about 2 months and one came up to be a 1913S type 2 ! They are with that ugly looking but what could I have done ? I preffere to have a dated buffalo but have one more dateless coin ! Any thoughs ? Report this Post to the Staff

I wonder why they are so poor with dates? they always have been even as a child in the 1960s it seemed that Buffalo nickels had poor dates. The old Jefferson seem fine for the most part, maybe placement of the date? Same mineral content so it puzzles me. Thanks for any ideas! Report this Post to the Staff

All you have to do is check time to time , I have coins that the date shows up in 3 days and this 1913S took about 2 months because was completly dateless ! Some of them ll never come up again but my op you ll have to try because whats the value of a dateless coin?! Report this Post to the Staff

tamshowoff Valued Member United States 326 Posts	Posted 05/18/2011 4:22 pm Back in the 50's a guy came to our coin club meeting hawking a solution to bring back the dates on nickels. It was amazing. Within seconds the original date was restored. we all bought some and did our dateless Buffalo nickles. Even did some with weak dates. Sorry to say but now I have a bunch of nickels with little circles around the dates where the solution (I think it was nitric acid) ate away the soft metal. RollHunter Pillar of the Community United States 687 Posts	Posted 05/19/2011 01:13 am Acid dating a Buffalo nickel is without a doubt damage - however, that doesn't mean that an uncommon date revealed with acid is worth less than a dateless coin. Your 1913-S TII is a great find, acid or otherwise. My best date recovered with vinegar is 1917-S. Report this Post to the Staff

The mint mark is the last thing to go on the Type Is so there's usually no need to nic-a-date them. Nice find though!
