I finally found a 1939 - S. Yay
Now, still looking for the 39D, 43D, and 50D to complete my set from circulation, well, roll searching

Congrats on the 1939S! I really should get to searching more nickel boxes, but at the moment my bank's coin counter is broken and all my spare cash is currently in penny form.  Still need the 38D, 44D, 45D, and 50D for a complete set. Who knows, I may even be able to complete a proof set from roll searching. Here's a list of the one's I've found in rolls so far: 1942(Cu), 1951, 1957, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1971S, 1976S, 1980S, 1985S, 1995S, 1999S. All except the 42, 71, 76, and 85 are still in Pr-60+ condition somehow. |

just searched 5 rolls of nickels and got
an 83 with a chip in not sure if its an error)
57 d
56 d is awesome condition
40
and an 81 proof :)
also searched 20 rolls of pennies and only got 2 hole fillers a 71s and 2 wheats, one in which looks like someone abused :(

Especially the further you go back, there was less and less of a difference between proof and well struck circ coins. No cameo and the luster was closer. You could look at the steps, but after a bit of circulation they might get mushed. I could maybe see someone finding a 57, or 60-64, although the fact that you have found all of them while only finding a handful of much more likely proofs says to me that maybe you've attributed them wrong. Finding a 42 or a 51 seams pretty much impossible to me. I've never heard of anyone finding these proofs in circulation. They were rare when they were struck and only real collectors bought them. They also are much more valuable. Unless someone stole them and decided to dump in circulation I see no way, and even then, what would be the chances. Please show pics. Please prove me wrong. The oldest proof I've ever found was a 69-S. |

The '42 Proof is a bit dusty, but still shows remnants of a brilliant field around the lettering. It also has full steps and an extremely sharp rim. I can't take a good enough picture of it with the photo equipment I have to show this, so you'll just have to believe me. All of the other old proofs I found in the same box of customer rolled nickels that seemed to me was definitely someone's dumped collection as it also had a 39D and two 39S in it. I've got a couple pictures of the 1951 Proof as proof (sorry I couldn't help the pun). Like I said, I don't have any camera that can focus well enough to photograph coins properly, but at least you can tell that it is a 1951 Proof through the fuzziness. http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/...51ddoobv.pnghttp://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7361/51ddorev.pngNow what you can't see from these photos is the Doubled Obverse ( for reference, it's the same one listed in the CherryPickers Guide for the date) I'm planning to get it slabbed when I get around to finding a dealer who can submit to PCGS for me. Box 23: no silver, no Buffalo nickels. However, I did fill a hole! 1946-S. Not sure why it took me so long to find that one, but no complaints now. Found a Jefferson that was worn smoother than any I've ever seen. vinegar and then acetone revealed a large 'P' above Monticello, and a 3 in the last # of the date. Guess I got a silver nickel in the box. Edited by robbudo

I've noticed buffaloes and silver again too. These last 3 boxes came in around the 1st of the month, wonder if people got bills to pay ...
