To me it looks like 1817, but I have no experience in identifying these. Is my hunch correct? And what would it be worth in this condition?

The head doesn't look like 1817. I would guess 1837, and in that condition it wouldn't be worth much.

Your coin, IMO, is from 1837-1839. The obverse looks like the Head of 1838, which was used in those three years.

Worth? Just my guess: $6-8. Still pretty cool!,

After looking at the different heads I definitely agree 1837 now. Was totally just basing my guess on looking at the date. I have never owned a large cent, this was just a seller pic I saw on ebay labeled as dateless. Now that I have finished my Buffalo nickel set I'm just starting to take a gander at other coins to learn about.

You dont own a large cent? Well, I strongly suggest you check them out! Even crappy draped bust large cents you can get for under $10! I picked one up from a fellow CCF'er for only $7! Large cents are cheap, and really cool!

Nope, that's not a series I have ever really even paid any attention to. Definitely something I am interested in now, though.

Yep 1837 is my vote too. Large cents are great, so interesting, and hard to find problem free for a good price when you get to the early ones. I'm currently trying to put together a set back to 1800 without spending more than $20 on a coin (I don't count shipping to make it easier on myself). I have 7 more to go, but they're gonna be a doozy. Oh and the 1804 is incredibly expensive so that's not gonna happen but maybe I'll just glue 2 1804 Half Cents together for that one.

I'm very interested in large cents, so for a few years (2011-2013, mostly) I bought every example under $10 or so that I could find.
I now have three - one of which was bought for $35, another was a gift, and the third is a dateless example from the 1820s that's in even worse condition than the OP coin (and was mislabeled as 1890 on our equivalent of ebay).

...I think now you can guess how commonly they come up at coin stores in my country (well, city).
I should probably search for them better; I automatically think of $10 as a huge lot of money, which often makes me ignore nice deals like these. But I suppose it's possible that there really aren't any.
