This error must have been caused by the waves in the die itself, is that true? Which would make it a variety, is that correct?
Either way, I don't recall seeing too many contemporary SP errors or varieties around. I imagine they would be far less common than on business strikes. Does anybody else have any?

Photos are tiny, but it looks like a plating issue. Poke it with a toothpick and the wavy parts should move.

I'm embarrassed I hadn't thought to prod it. Yep, the waves move. I was wondering how such a big error on the die could make it through on a SP strike. I wonder what would cause a bubble....spot of grease on the planchet? Thanks all.

I have seen similar error coins in circulation - generally people don't catch on to plating errors.
