Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and to coin collecting in general. I have got two Maria Theresia Thalers, dated 1780, which are, as far as I can tell, from anywhere between 1853 and now. From the research I have done I have found out that I cannot hope to determine when and where they were probably struck myself. I don't think they will turn out to be a very special or interesting variety, but still I would like to know. So if anyone can make some educated guesses about the origins of my coins it would be much appreciated. The diameter is 40 or 41 millimeters. Uploaded are pictures of only one because they are very similar (although the dots in the central shield, which I gather may be useful for identification, are absent from the other one). Sorry for bad quality images. Thanks a lot!

Maarten: to the CCF!

There is a very good booklet:
'The Restrike Talers of Maria Teresa' by M.R. Broome, Doris Stockwell Memorial papers No.1,
Reprinted from the 'Numimatic Chronicle', seventh series Vol.X11, pages 221 to 245, plates 20 to 23. 1972,
printed by the University Press, Oxford.

The booket was printed as an independent publication.

Might require a large amount of digging to get to this information, but that is where you will find the answer to your question. May require an inter library search at international level, through a National or State library.

The Numismatic Chronicle is the journal of the British Royal Numismatic Society.
Google:
'numismatic journal' to start your search for this information.

I'm not sure what internet resources you may have encountered thus far, but you may find these a useful starting point:

http://www.1messydesk.com/MTTs/m_th..._talers.html

http://www.theresia.name/en/svariants.html

Both pages also have a bibliography which you can use to find more literature on the subject.

Hope this helps.

Look for a match with the most common types first.

Thanks. Yeah, I've been on both sites, though I haven't seen all pages. Maybe I should try Haffner's Lexicon?

I couldn't find the booklet or journal text Sel referred to, not even via my university library. A pity.

Thanks for the help!
