I bought this from the ebay. I bought it on a whim thinking it contained silver but now I'm not so sure.

Does it have any silver and what are your thoughts?

Well if it is real the bullion value (at full weight anyways) would be $11.20 in silver. Still a good buy at 1.25 I think!

Bnmakr1 The coin is probably genuine. It is NOT a Second Republic coin however since only 8Rs were made in the second republic.

Mister Kairu The coin is either a 1/2 R or more probably a 1R based on the design of the eagle. Did you know that most eagles varied by denomination as well as by year?

The seller said nothing about the coin being an 8R.

I have no idea why he called it 1904 or Second Republic.

My guess is early 1840s 1R. Just checked early to mid 1830s 1R is a better fit by 1838 they had adopted the concave winged eagle.

Ah gotcha. Thanks, swamperbob! I assumed just from a quick lookup on numista for the 1880's and like you mentioned the only coin that came up for that approx. design was an 8R. Nice to learn about the different eagles for denomination!

Swamperbob. Thanks a bunch. The coin should be here on Saturday and Ill let you know the size of the coin (which can hopefully clear up what denomination it is).
