This was a doubled die discovered in 2009, and described by Ken Potter. It is smooth and rounded as if it has been hubbed there as a part of the design. Ken determined that since it certainly did not belong there and had to be a displaced area of "extra design" from an early hubbing. The extra design appears to fit well within the confines and shape of the lowermost left branch of the left evergreen tree.

I had been searching for this variety (albeit not aggressively) since 2010. It was included in the 67th Charlton catalogue, and now I finally have found one. It was on ebay, and the seller knew what he had, so it was not cheap, but, now I have it...

Merry Christmas to me!!

I stumbled on one of theses back in 2007 and found 4 of these 1978 sets, all with the square jewl 50ct since then and found no differences in them. At first back in 2007 on the Canadian Uncirculated PL Set site we called it floating luggage and then Ken Potter came up with a realistic reasoning for this neat error. I put this coin in the class of the #3 1974 double yoke because its scarce. I'v only seen 2 ever sell on ebay in the past 8 years that I know of and this was the first one that was certified. As for the ICCS certification in the comment section they missed the Charlton number assigned to this variety. Lastly SPP I think you snagged a great coin in the highest grade possible and fits well in your great collection of nickle dollars.

Thanks for selling it to me sir, I honestly think it was a steal of a deal, due to its scarcity. I am happy to see another set of eyes on the nickel dollar series!!

I am thinking of writing this one up in my RCNA column, and if the above information is correct, then you shall be credited with the discovery of the variety in 2007 (and not a Michigan collector in 2009).

Nice find, a real great coin and quite scarce.... I wasn't sure if it was really a double die when Ken first wrote about it.... now I am really on the lookout as it is one of the few nickel dollar varieties still needed for my collection.

Just received this back from ICCS and note they only called it Double 1978. Humm, what does that mean? This was my last spare to get certified.
