My first abassid dirham . It is totally new for me,but it was very cheap yesterday on ebay . Ruler Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Mahdi (775-785) mint Madinat Jayy (Isfahan,Iran ) year AH 162 27 mm , 3 gr. Who knows more of this coins ? albert
Very attractive coin. I have always found it interesting how the medieval Arabic coin makers found a creative outlet in calligraphy, since Islam forbids the depiction of humans in art out of fear of idol worship.
I have a couple from this era, but I have always found the language barrier to be a significant one. With Roman and Greek coins, it is easy to attribute based on what you can read. Not the case with these early Arabic coins, which do not even bear an AH date.
Still nice coins to have if you can get them already attributed, however.
