Hi,
Just joined the forum, and hope someone can help.
I found this coin in woods in Lancashire England. Initially thought it was a old UK penny, but it isn't.
Only one side is slightly readable, and shows an eagle (?)atop some laurel type leaves. As far as I can read it the text seems to be - SIB Y SOB:ObSO\ORA. May not be quite right as it is not perfectly clear at present. Diameter is 34mm. It is non magnetic so I presume it to be copper or bronze.

Thanks

This coin is quite possibly a 1/4 Real from the Mexican state of Sonora: (more information at link below)

Would be interesting to know how such a coin ended up all the way over in England!

I think Kefiroth hit it. I was thinking Mexico before scrolling to the post. A history would be very interesting if there was one to tell.

Thanks for that.
You would seem to be spot on with the ID.
It also seems to be quite rare according to the link (95).
Pity it's in such poor condition.

I found this in Lancashire in the place where the first spade was cut for the Leeds Liverpool canal in 1770 and the canal was cut through the solid rock. I was metal detecting in a small wood just above the cutting.
The coin was badly crusted, so I took advice from online and soaked it in olive oil overnight. Gradually details on one side became more legible.

As to where it came from, I have no idea. It's a very rural location. Not near any residences.
Clearly there would have been hundreds of manual workers building the canal in the late 18th century, but this would be at least 70 years before the coin was minted.
I am hoping the olive oil will eventually reveal the other face of the coin in a few weeks.
