I am not sure why I did not see it before, but Charlton shows the following...
2003 Crowned - MS, PL, PR & SP Uncrowned - MS W Uncrowned - PL
Which makes the uncrowned a circulation only coin. Quatchi, I think at least the uncrowned goes back on your list.

Yeah, there are some 2003 New Effigy/Uncrowned Loon Dollar business strikes available... My issue isn't with that coin, it's with the 2003 Old Effigy/Crowned Loon Dollar business strike only. Surely if these coins exist, someone on here would have one and maybe even be able to provide a photo of it...

Quatchi, that you've questioned the existence of the circulated 2003 crowned/old effigy considering virtually every publication/dealer has indicated it to be -- meanwhile in the preceding 12 years there's absolutely no record of it existing -- is very remarkable. Either it was never minted and why the error to indicate that it was is puzzling; or, Only a few were and it is a virtually unknown rarity; or? Have you thought about contacting either the Bank of Canada or RCM to inquire about it?

Possibly. It's a rather fascinating mystery considering how well known the great search for non-mag 2005/2006P penny has become. Meanwhile the scarcity of the 2003 circulated crowned/old effigy loonie - if it indeed exists - has gone without notice until now.

I went looking for these a few years ago for my kids' loonie collections and turned up nothing on ebay or in circulation. I had a couple of pre-2011 boxes of 1000 loonies and turned up nothing. I ended up getting the BU versions for my kids, only because the business strikes supposedly existed (and I was not generally buying the many proof versions of all the loonies for their collections).

Chances of finding many more will evaporate with the RCM's ARP.

I sent an Email to RCM today inquiring about this coin. We'll see how far that goes, but I'll share whatever information they provide.

I was looking through Asyn auctions last night. Wanted to see how prices are doing in general. I found he has an auction for a roll of old effigy 2003 loons. Heres the auction # 301841939998. So apparently there is a crowned 2003 loon. He just has photo of roll, not the ends. His photos have gotten worse on single coins. I cannot make out details on smaller coins.

Unless Asyn's changed the listing, it refers to "old head", not "old effigy".
That suggests it's the new effigy of the older headed queen that was introduced in 2003. The photo purelywasted linked above is also of the "old head".
"Old head" = new/updated/current 2003 to present uncrowned effigy "Young head/crowned" = old/past effigy 1990-2003 -- topic of quachi's search
Yes, it's confusing.

Thanks for sharing Pocket Change 50, but I have to agree with Wildflower on this one. To back up Wildflower's theory, I did an ebay search for "old head" and another of asynpm's rolls came up... 201498340524. There's a photo of this roll of 2003 P "old head" quarters that has "NE"... (presumably meaning "New Effigy") hand written on the roll in a bag that is labelled "Old Head". I've asked for photos of the roll ends on the dollar roll just to be sure.

Asyn just replied to my email
It is the New Effigy. Confirmed.

That's disappointing. To me old head would mean the crowned effigy as its the older portrait. Just shows language can be misleading and doesn't mean the same thing to everyone. I was really excited. The crowned portrait is much better than our current one. I like the new Royal Mint portrait, its a bit younger looking and regal.
