Finn235 Pillar of the Community United States 6130 Posts	Posted 01/08/2016 6:25 pm Figured I would share this one from a recent lot purchase: Iberia, Irippo (modern day seville) AE (semis?) Obverse: Bust of Octavian, legend "IRIPPO" Reverse: Seated woman or deity, holding cornucopia and pine cone. I admittedly know very little about these coins, except that this one was being offered at a price too good to pass up. The coin seems to have suffered from environmental damage and/or improper cleaning, but features nice full details, which seems to be uncommon for this type of coin. Lot also contained 8 of the "bull and crescent" type from Castulo. Still working through an ID on each of those. Thanks for looking Report this Post to the Staff

Interesting that your reference lists this as an as; every other reference I have seen only ever mentions it as a semis, hence the lighter weight. What stumps me is how someone ever figured out that the woman on the reverse is holding a pine cone rather than an orb. I would assume that if we knew that detail, we would at least know what deity is on the reverse, rather than just "woman". Also interstingly is that I don't think I have ever seen a fully preserved specimen of this coin... all are broken, corroded, or worn completely flat in spots. Report this Post to the Staff
