If you are into Olympic coins then the Proof versions can certainly appeal to you. The UNC coins are genuinely dull and boring. However, the $10 with its 1.44 tr. oz. of silver is quite impressive in terms of size and weight. The $5 has half the silver - 0.72 tr. oz. is less impressive (more like a slightly bigger silver dollar). There is nothing particularly interesting in the entire series, except the 1973-74 Obverse with 1973 Map Reverse.

Those coins were released to help finance the Montreal Olympic games held in 1976. They are bought and sold mostly for their silver content. They hold little numismatic value.

So on that basis, you probably made the right decision not to bid on the auction. There is about $56 USD worth of silver in that 4-coin set.

$88 with shipping is a stretch but is aligned with other BIN listings.

If you watch auctions you will see these sets sell for CDN$70-$90. The wood boxes are very nice.

What will it take for these coins become desirable, a 100 years, a major melt. I remember the commercials as a kid, I wanted them so bad, but we couldn't afford them. Its rather sad how much disinterest there is in this set.

@Pocket Change 50, My wooden cases sold faster than the coins did.... One day perhaps they will be worth more than melt.

So if you had your answer, why ask? $110 CND is $76 USD...

Canadian coins, I guess you were never taught that the only stupid question is the one that is not asked. The Op just wanted some opinions.

It really doesn't surprise me that much. I think we're finally hitting the point where the proof sets are disappearing. We've been melting or selling these for melt for so long its possible the quantity available is drying up. I'll be honest, I've seen one complete 28 coin set come through here in the last year and just a smattering of single pieces.

I would also wager the bidders were Stateside and felt they were picking up a good deal.

@Jon, as a comparison how many Olympic sets would you see come through in prior years. It would be great to have something to compare to. Are you seeing lots of other nclt being offered as well. A dealer perspective is always interesting, as you are in the thick of the trade.

thanks all
as stated by Alex
these were tracking
about 70-90 cdn S
for the most part
a sale @ 110.00 cdn
plus shipping
is roughly 20-30 percent
over my book value
I was just wondering
if they are beginning to
attract more interest
nowadays ?

@pocket_change In the lead-up to the precious metal peak prices in 2011, we were getting one set (proof or Unc, but proof were much less common) every two weeks at least. I'm very reticent to say that the drought is due to melting and refining, because it corresponded pretty handily with the drops in silver prices.
