I am considering doing PDS set for all ultra moderns (1965 - current). I am not going for MS70 or anything super high grade, just looking for inexpensive fun for the kid and I. How would you guys go about catching up?
I am considering just getting the mint and proof sets up to about 1998 since most of them are pretty cheap and I have a small assortment already.
I have noticed that the 1999 and newer tend to be much more expensive. Would chasing individual coins be better? Especially keeping in mind that I wont be back to the states for another three years.

When I was doing this, I broke up mint and proof sets. Sometimes you can find lots of these on ebay for below face. If any of the more current sets seem too expensive, just wait on picking these up. They will continue their decline in price.

You can often find bunches of sets that have had one or two coins stripped out of each set by folks hoping to cash in on a high grade TPG submission. In many cases you can get darned close to buying them for slightly more than face value. That's what I'd be searching for if I were trying my hand at the 65+ sets.

@Half where are you at for the next three years? Are you stationed over seas? I'm breaking up some proof sets and a few mint sets I'm just keeping the nickels. And if you are doing lowballs and circulated, I have a jar of coins I can always have the wife go through ;) let me know and I can push them to your APO address

Sometimes you can find great deals on a group of mint sets. 20 years or so at a pop. I would start there looking for those and fill in the gaps as I ran across a bargain. Good Luck!

Any interest in roll searching? The coins are not always in good condition but you should be able to find all the modern P and D's you want. It's how I put my State Quarter collection together. As with the S mints that's going to have to be purchased because the majority of those issues are proofs. Try going to a coin show where dealers usually have books upon books of coins to go through and you could probably purchase a lot individually. I would speculate that sets 1999 and newer are most expensive just because of the amount of coins they contain since that is when they started doing the commemorative quarters. The 2009 set for example is a beast. Contains 5 different quarters, 5 different gold dollars, 4 different cents, and then the dime/nickel/half dollar for that year.

He is stationed in Spain with the US Navy... It makes it a little harder for him to get coins... Although the Navy Federal Credit Union branch there should have rolls of coins... I always sold my spare change back when I left the country...

@cjweber I am leaving Spain this summer for Japan. You are not set up to receive forum mail, so if you don't mind please shoot me a message.
@Elimist My CRH addiction consists of mostly Euros. LOL I do get some from the US bank here but they are mostly really beat up. Not much post 2010 either. lol The nearest store is a day trip so I only make it up there every couple months. The US stuff is quite high priced anyway
You are right about the massive amount of coins in the new sets. I just did the math and now the prices make more sense to me, but the premium on a couple of the years is crazy.
