Just curious about a small gold coin we found made into a hat pin. The front shows an Indian cheif and the reverse read California gold 1885. Could this be real or is it just something made for the jewelry industry. The size can't be more then 3/8" across and is hexigon shape. It was my wives grandmothers and shows no signs of tarnish.

ODD, I know little a bout the small denomination gold coins that were produced during the gold rush period other than apparently there have been counterfeits to be aware of. I think the Red Book talks about it, something about the coin has to state Dol or Dollar to have a chance of being authentic.

I believe Jim is correct. Real California Gold will indicate a denomination, typically some fraction of a dollar.
