I received this coin today and I certainly can see why they decided to not produce the BU version. There would not be much difference between a proof and BU of this one.

I look forward to Commems review as I'm sure it will be very detailed and complete but in the meantime, I'll note a couple of observances. Firstly, I really like the details of the design. It has a classic feel and balance. The second sailing ship is a nice touch as is the note of Heart's Content, NF on the map.

The other thing that seems different to me is the Queen's effigy. It looks to have less frosting especially on her face which appears more detailed than other recent mint coins.

Overall, I'm pleased with this one and look forward to comments from others who have it in hand.

@CC Ottawa you should add the photo to the ships thread in the main forum, it would be a great addition there. Interesting the frosting on the queen, seems to suggest different colors, between hair, face, and clothes, its very subtle. A nice touch. I like the scroll work, gives it an old world feel.

In 2015, they released the BU version a bit later. The Queen would be different!

Sure, but not this year.

Per the Mint: "Only the proof fine silver dollar will be made in 2016 as the brilliant uncirculated fine silver dollar will not be made this year."

I think that's a beautiful coin and I notice that the detail really stands out because of the shading and highlights. The almost 3 dimensional effect wouldn't be possible in BU, I wonder as RCM moves towards artistry of greater complexity, that became the reason it was dropped.

I very much like the frosting on the obverse it gives it a very nice look that seems to change with various angles you look at. I also like to gold plated one in the Proof set, it has the same effect.
