Hi everyone, do you think that this 1745 half penny is a regal piece or is it a contemp? Also, how would you grade it? I'm not sure if it is a (US) Fine or very fine. Thanks.

Regal, not counterfeit. Dig on the obverse will hurt the value, and in the UK utterly destroy the value. US grade I'd guess fine details. Just not enough detail remains on the shield on the reverse or the mail on the obverse to make VF.

EFLargeCents - Thanks for the input. Yeah, the small dig on the Obv is not the best. But it is not that deep, and I don't feel like it radically distracts the eye from the other features of the coin. And, I'd agree that it's a fine.

Also, out of curiosity, why is it that in the UK such a blemish would completely obliterate the value of a coin rather than just reduce it a bit? In other words, what is it about the markets in the UK that differ from US markets in this way?

Great question. I haven't quite figured out the answer myself. Even the most mundane and easily overlooked blemish cause quite a consternation for British collectors, particularly when it comes to the rims. I have one particular coin that would likely get AU58/MS62 if I were to send it to a TPG, but was told it wasn't desirable because of a millimeter sized rim knock that is hardly noticeable for something so old.

I think times are changing regarding blemishes.

I would grade this as almost Fine (perhaps VG10).

Without the dig, I'd expect to pay £10 for it but as it is, I would expect to get it for £5.
