Hiya all,

First post :) I've picked up a few coins on my travels over the years with the intention of starting a proper collection (but never got round to it!). I though that a good place to start was with identifying some of the coins I already have. So here are two bronze coins that I purchased in Turkey about 20yrs ago.

I have some small silver coins too but my photography is pretty bad! If there are any posts on good coin photography i'd love to find them :)

Thank you very much,

Nige.

I believe these should be silver tetradrachm coins about 17 grams each so not sure if they are authentic

Welcome to the ancients forum!

Can't comment on the coins; not seen these types in bronze before.

But there is an entire forum on coin photography. Go to the "All Forums" link at the top left-of-center of any page, and then scroll down for a link to "Coin Photography."

Hiya,

Thanks for the forum info!

Yes, I had my doubts about their authenticity, but I couldn't see any casting seam so though there was a change they were genuine.

Thank you

Nige.

Sorry to say but they are both fakes. They are supposed to be silver tetradrachms. The first one is supposed to be from Thrace, Thasos, and the second coin is supposed to be Lysimachos from the Kingdom of Thrace.

you can buy this coins in Turkey since 50 years . I
changed a similar Lysimachos (30 mm , 12.2 gr) tetradrachme in 69 for a ancient blanket when I was there by car.
