the home page for ICG states that has been some recent upheaval, I do know that J.P Martin has left for ANACS, can someone elaborate on this, what does this mean for ICG and ANACS? I collect silver eagles and I almost have a complete ICG set (-95W of course)should I stick it out with ICG or move my holdings to ANACS? Any thoughts and any direction is greatly appreciated. In my opinion, ANACS is preferable to ICG for most coins. I find ANACS' grading to be very accurate and within 1-2 points of my own grading. I feel that ICG, overall, grades more liberally. However, when it comes to ancient coins, ICG is the authority and I would always submit ancients to them. They are also very reliable for authentication.

I believe that you will see ANACS pushing into the #2 spot soon. I think that NGC is moving down. I don't know that ICG will make it into the top 3 although they do have the nicest slabs out there in my opinion.

Hello, Mudpuppy772. What Susanlynn9 probably assumed that you understood was that most everyone agrees that PCGS is the #1 grading service, for accuracy and value on resale. In case you had not been aware, consensus within the collecting community seems to be that that there are 4 "acceptable" grading services, ONLY; and that they are generally ranked: PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, in that order. As Susanlynn suggested, they are all good in certain areas ... such as authentication ... and some of them might be better than the others for certain types of coins or services. There also seems to be a general sense - at least among many who post here - that the quality, reliability and reputation of NGC has slipped, while the quality, reliability and reputation of ANACS has been climbing. However, matters between ANACS and ICG are in some measure of turmoil and confusion (i.e., many of the former ICG graders now work for ANACS, and vice versa, as of late December 2007). So most are withholding opinion for a while.

I'd say if you're putting together an ICG silver eagle collection for your own enjoyment, you should probably complete it. If you're putting it together for resale, you've probably already made a mistake. Many - MANY - collectors and dealers are only interested in PCGS or NGC certified coins. ANACS and ICG certified coins trade at a discount, if at all.

Personally, I generally use ANACS, but I have no particular expectation of resale ... at least not for a profit. I also own PCGS and NGC certified coins. I have never purchased an ICG coin.
