1957-P Proof Jefferson nickel DDO

Going through hundreds of these Jefferson nickel proofs determined to get a handle on correctly identifying doubled dies but still a novice only going on my 2nd year of collecting on 2/11/2016.

This is my current Proof Nickel Variety Searching Methodology which as all things could be improved but it works for me so far. kind of...

I have 40 1967-p proof nickels.

With a 1957-p Proof the point of interest for most(not all) of that date's doubled dies on this year is the star, then liberty and the date.

so about 11 coins in I notice this extra distortion in the stars shape under the 15X el cheapo loupe so I put it under the microscope for better view and see the following.

There is something going on there so I head over to BVC to look and see if I can narrow down the options by only writing down DDO #'s with a star like that or matching or close to matching.

I get and switch view to list to get a total number and I see there are 17 1957 proof DDO in total. See link below

http://www2.briansvarietycoins.com/...at/30/simple

so I look at the first one the 1957 WDDO-001 Proof

It does have some similar qualities but I can quickly rule it out as the right side of the star is different

so on to the next one 1957 WDDO-002 Proof

which is a very weak DDO and can instantly be ruled out without much thought

so on too 1957 WDDO-003 Proof

ok we ave a lot of similarities on this one !!

looks like it could be a match but I feel my example might just be slightly strong of a strike and more pronounced

So I note this 1957 WDDO-003 Proof possible match

but Very Important sometimes DDO share similar features so best to check all of them in-case a better match

So I go down the list and see find a close match to it and write down the possibilities.

1957 WDDO-004 Proof
1957 WDDO-011 Proof

Ok now I look at the markers.. mind you sometimes there are no matching markers

1957 WDDO-003 Proof ? could not see marker areas clearly - still possible but no confirmation move along

1957 WDDO-004 Proof
there was no Die gouges below ST and second T of STATES on reverse nor was there a Die scratch above RT of LIBERTY on the obverse. - could see area clearly they are not present

NO Die gouges below ST and second T of STATES

1957 WDDO-011
Proof ok the Close Class II doubling TY on LIBERTY on the 011 was not present - we can eliminate this one now

No doubling TY on LIBERTY

1957 WDDO-016 Proof there is something in correct area might be a Die dot below US of PLURIBUS.

I can't figure out the area to the right of the temple -(eye line) they show in image
there should be a Short die gouge in Jefferson's hair to right of his temple. ?

But I still believe it is a 1957 WDDO-016 Proof as we have one marker and closest star match

Any comments, suggestions or feedback welcome

I picked it up on the side by side shots of the star, but I also come at it with years of searching experience. I think the methodology is pretty good. I guess I am similar in my approach to cents. Just never wrote it down step by step. To me cents are easy because I have done them so long. When I turn one over and see the date and mint mark, I immediately pull the PUP(pick up points) for that particular year and mint. I will examine each area that a known variety exists. After exhausting those areas I will look at soe of the other areas on the coin that are notorious for doubling. Now keep in mind, I have been doing this for a long time, so it does not hurt for others to have websites like Copper Coins, Variety Vista, and Brian's Varieties open to compare images with your coin. Just do not sell yourself short by only looking for those varieties. Another thing to remember is something that Coop has been saying a lot lately, and that is do not use too much magnification. When taking photos, it is one thing, but using it to identify is completely different. With over magnification, lights , shadows, and the coin surface will play tricks on you. You will start to see things that are just not there, or even if it is there, is of so little significance you should just pass it up and move on. I appreciate you taking the time to put this all down for the benefit of others. Of course everyone should tweak this method to suit your individual taste.

seal06, yeah the side by side pictures did make it easier but other than this post I usually did that part in my head and I made the image for post after doing everything else. But that could be a good visual overlay shortcut
Rest in Peace

Very interesting to follow your search in unlocking the mystery. It's nice to see the steps taken in your analysis.
