Hi everyone, I have sorted around 300 rolls of wheats lately and have never seen a coin the color of this 1918-S, it is very smooth and dark green like jade. The coin next to it is a 1937-S. Any ideas?
I have a bunch of LWC's with verdigris or other "moldy" looking green on them but this is satin dark green almost black and is very smooth. I haven't seen another one like it.
Dug copper is often this color if soil is without salt and the coin has been buried for at least a few decades. This hard dark green shell cannot be cleaned in any way other than water and air dry to remove soil.
It does not pit the surfaces as long as it's left alone.
Thanks everyone, it is a mystery to me. Here is a collection of some of the strange colors I have been seeing lately. The dark green LWC posted earlier is in the second row, 6th from left. (sample is from 300 rolls of LWC)
Since Ocala sharpen/brightened the picture (thanks) a couple things: does Lincoln's nose look longer and pointier (notice arc under nose) and his chin seems narrower and longer with his lips further apart in the 1918-S. Did they change the portrait between 1918 and 1937?
