I wholeheartedly agree with a thank you to the owners, moderators and posters on this site.
Without excessive hyperbole I can say that this forum kept me from selling my whole collection and getting out of the hobby.
I was recently at a real crossroads with my collecting. I was very fearful of counterfeits and the more I learned the more I wanted nothing to do with coin collecting and where I think it is going. It wasn't just counterfeiting, it was loss of collectors (were older coins going to flood the market and lose value) and a host of other things related to the older series I was collecting.
But through reading enough posts and thinking hard enough on what I was reading.I just altered the way I collect in another way that makes me just as happy.
I still collect older stuff- but I limit it strictly to certain circulated silver series. No
LWC,
IHC, nothing older than Barber, etc.
I have also shifted my focus to post clad series (or any series such as Roosevelt that has clad, even if it starts pre-clad) and modern commemorative half and dollar coinage and am thrilled and busy.
I am enjoying the hobby again without as much worry about counterfeiting (not saying it is entirely gone, but when you are dealing with a 21st century silver dollar in OGP with a COA, the chances of counterfeit problems are a lot less likely than with a raw coin a hundred years old.
Plus, I have not ceased to be amazed at just how limitless the collecting in this area is—I will be busy for years and years.
Anyway—I was able to shift my focus to something that makes me happy without giving up the hobby and without stressing about the future so much and I owe it to this forum and the posters for giving me lots to think about on a daily basis.
