I have a question for the more experinced. I have a box full of world coins that was given to me. There are many different sizes, kinds, and denominations in the box. I have absolutely no idea what I have. Is there a price guide book that would have alot of these coins in it. I have a Red Book, but that is only for US coins. I would like to get some idea of what I have and the value. Are world coins as valuable as US coins. Do some older world coins contain silver that the US coins? Thanks for any help. I really enjoy and learn alot from these forums.

Hi Conner,

I have a similar box of world coins. From what I have heard people chatting about on the site, there is a price guide for world coins by Krause.

I actually just looked up Krause online at my local library and placed a hold on their copy of Guide to World Coins Krause this morning.

Hope that helps.

The Krause catalogs of World Coins are one of the best guides. If you have a lot of coins or are planning to build a collection of world coins I would recommend buying them. You can also post pictures of you coins here.

www.numismaster.com is Krause's online version of their catalog. I Think it is still free to look up coins, you just have to register. It has a great search engine, but they want you to pay for prices and mintage numbers. That's OK though! You can get basic pricing information from https://www.(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed . This will get you some basic info on your coins without leaving the comfort of your home or spending a dime.

By the way. If you get stumped you can always post your unknown coins on the forum. I think there is typically an unofficial race to identify them.

For the most part, no. Take a US coin and a non-US coin of equivalent rarity - the US coin will almost always be more expensive. It doesn't mean that foreign coins are worthless, just that they're worth less. The reason? Demand. There are far more coin collectors per head of population in the US than just about anywhere else, and the US is a big country. And most collectors in the US want US coins.

Sure, but you'd pretty much need to refer to the Krause catalogue (or the websites posted by snowman) to find out which ones. Pre-1914, most "silvery-looking" coins will actually be silver, but the World Wars knocked the European economies pretty hard, and many countries ceased using silver except for their "flagship" coins. Silver had mostly disappeared from circulation worldwide by the late 60's, but the date each country ceased minting silver was different.

Snowman,

Can I email you some pictures of some world coins that I can not identify. When I try to post them it says my file is 117.8kb and it has to be less than 90kb. I don't know how to change this but I would be glad to email them to you.

The thing about posting is that lots of people get to see and learn. Besides, there are people much more knowledgeable than me at the CCF.
