I can be happy with coins of any grade from the lowest to the highest. It depends of the individual coin, and how good the value for money is, at the time of purchase.

Then again, that is the attitude that I have, and I justify it by whatever opportunity comes along, in terms of value for money. That obviously includes the grade of the coin.
It becomes essential to have a good feeling for the value of a coin that includes ALL factors that contribute to it's value.

Like all collectors who have a lifetime love for numismatics, I naturally rely on decades of experience to have some idea of a value of a coin, that I may have never seen before. That especially applies European hammered coins of which I have very little expertise and so, it is still easy to make mistakes!

The greysheet is a good starting point, but when you start buying at shows and auctions as well as ebay, you realize the market is very different for some series. For example capped bust halves in XF-MS60 are much higher than the sheet, even for type, while Bust dollars are somewhat lower in VF and better. Many other examples as well.

Heritage and the ebay Buy Now section which most time is priced high and PCGS Price Guide ..... On lower grade / price coins I use the PCGS price guide and figure about 50 percent of price listed ..... And check the RedBook, bluebook and Great Collections plus current ebay auctions in progress ....

Price I'm willing to pay then is determined at a max number and I go from there ..... I don't believe there is one set source of method to determine the price of an individual coin, maybe a range to work with but not an exact price ....

I have a beautiful 1919-S super full strike buffalo AU55, this coin actually has a full nice horn, tail, date and Liberty something rare in a 1919-S and I would not sell for less than $475 which is over PCGS price guide of $425 so obviously I really don't want to sell but that is what I believe it is worth at least to me!
