I just learned today that two State Quarters, a Florida and a Maryland, were sent up into space on the New Horizons spacecraft that just finished visiting Pluto. Makes me wonder if any other space probes have coins in them.

I wonder if the State Quarters were special strikes made for the occasion or just ordinary proofs / business strikes

I know they sent those 2000 W gold Sacagawea dollars up on the shuttle as well, but they came back down safely when the shuttle landed and are collecting dust in a government vault somewhere...

carl I think he might have meant because they have the moon on the reverse.

Probably, from what I understand they use them for balance adjustment purposes.
