The Red Book shows 2 different varieties of the 1828 Large Cent...
Large, Narrow Date
Small, Wide Date

There are images in the book depicting each. The Small, Wide date clearly shows spacing between the numbers in the date. The Large, Narrow date shows the 1st 8 and 2 touching (or nearly touching). The 8's are clearly different between the 2 varieties.

Now on to my question...
Has anyone heard of a Large, Wide date variety? Because that is what I believe I have. The 8's are of the Large Date variety, and the 8 and 2 are spaced apart.

From your photos, and to my unpractice eye, I have to conclude that you have the large/narrow date variety. I believe the distance between the first 8 and the 2 is clearly smaller than what RedBook shows for the wide date variety. I would also say that the 8's AND the 2 are clearly large/narrow date variety as well. Buy, hey, I am NOT and expert on this subject, so take all I say with a grain of sodium chloride.

There are 12 varieties of the 1828 large cent. Only one of them is the small date (N-10) and there are 11 close dates. But only 8 of them has the 8 and 2 very close together. (N-1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 12. These are from three differeent obv dies) The other 3 of them have a wider spacing between the 8 and the 2. (N-8,9, & 11. These are from a single obv die.) Your coin appears to be from this last group. You can find pictures of all of the varieties here http://www.coinfacts.com/large_cent...arieties.htm
