I couldn't find this anywhere, so forgive me if I'm asking a question that's already been asked. I was curious though, what would an album of this magnitude with all of the major varieties included be valued at? I would imagine that the complete (sans 1921) album would be greater than the sum of its parts, correct?

So for an album w/ basically all VG graded coins price = ?
F graded = ?
etc.

Thank you for everyone's expertise.

Wrong! Complete sets always sell for less than the total of all the individual coins. Lower grade sets especially are mined for the key date coins and don't usually sell for much more than the total of the key date coins. Dealers could easily assemble complete sets for sale, but they never do,except by prior arrangement, because there's more money to be had selling the coins individually.

I should rephrase my question that you quoted. I understand the caveat of buying in bulk and selling individually. When I'm not on duty (military), I own and operate a small business and do just that. But aren't there collectors who are looking for complete sets? That's why there are listed values for say, Morgan dollars for complete sets of a specific grade, mint marks, mint marks and all varieties, etc. on sites such as PCGS, right? Sure they could sell for less of a premium per coin than if they were sold individually, but isn't a quick turnover more preferred? Maybe there's a way to balance the two ends of the spectrum, but I think that would be predicated on one's current inventory. Forgive me if I seem to be rambling, I like algorithms and getting a grasp of the bigger picture.

Use this site as a rough guide, the prices displayed are well above what they actually sell for, but it is a starting point.

I would then look at the average ebay prices on the coins and canada site for each given grade.

If you are looking for quick turnaround, full set/large lot auctions are quick and easy, but sometimes the prices realized are not great. I think a lot of it goes to how you value your time (1 auction vs. 50 auctions). It can even be good to pull out a few of the highest value coins, sell a partial set and have a few key dates as individual auctions. You get closer to the best of both worlds.

I think I see what he's saying its more important to sell the other coins attached to the key coin(s) as otherwise they wouldn't move at such prices and I agree he could be right in that respect. I think it was put best it really comes down to how much you value your time whether you want to piece it out or put out the whole thing. Of course the catalog prices are extremely inflated for a good portion of Canadian coins right now so past ebay auctions are a better measure.

Either look at Trends, Charlton, Haxby, or the CoinsandCanda coin site for the full retail prices. You should be able to sell the for 65-79% of Trends or 40-50% to a dealer. Individually is best to sell them, but Kijiji or Craig's list work well if you are near a large metro area. There re buyers right on this site in the Buy & sell subforum.
