I am a firm believer in a diversionary collection. put a bunch of foreign and cheap US in 2x2's placed in a nice 3 ring binders along with a inventory sheet (with well padded values).

The odd foreign coin enhanced with gold spray paint in a expensive/impressive looking Air-Tight looks valuable.
Make it look like it a primary collection. 2-3+ binders, working papers Etc.

This would be a good use for the "U-Fill It" Slabs on Flee Bay.
(a AG 1909 becomes a EF 45 1909 S VDB, A dipped 1956 XF becomes a MS-67 RED, Spin up the Dremel and a plain
bullion grade Walker half becomes a Proof-70) Be creative.

Make it look good and take pictures of the "collection" to give to law enforcement if it is stolen.

keep it in at least two locations (just like a real collection) you can go as far as having a Public (Semi)viewable safe to house the collection in.

And remember loose lips sink ships (and coin collections).

That's horrible. My heart and prayers go out to those folks. Nobody desirves being attacked by scumbags.

This is the exact reason I have a large dog and loaded guns hidden thoughout my house....along with other security precautions. Nothing is fool-proof, but my dog would have tore those guys up pepper spray or not. She would have also bought my wife or I enough time to get to a gun and safety. Number one security item in the world IMHO....A DOG.

In my research on home security, the one thing that kept coming up is a good dog. Went bike riding this afternoon and saw a cool sign posted on the gate of a homeowners perimeter. It had a picture of a Doberman and read: "I can make it to the fence in 2.8 seconds. Can you?"

Dogs are a good deterent and can be good at attacking someone who entered with the intention of stealing your goodies. But can a dog stop a bullet? If someone is hellbent on getting your stuff and comes in armed, a dog will not be able to stop the intruder in all likelihood. If you're home at the time of the invasion, it will serve the purpose of giving you a heads up due to the barking/growling so that's definitely a good thing. In my opinion, a good guard dog is just one piece of the puzzle, but if you have alot of valuables at your home then a good security system is a must, as well as a safe bolted to the floor, a gun for your own protection to go along with the dog. You cant say you're safe or your valuables are safe simply because you have a dog. That's just my opinion and I am sure others will disagree, but I will ask again if a dog can stop a bullet. Something to think about...

Many here say a dog is one of the best deterints for a home robbery. This is basically true but remember if it is a well liked pet and is shot, stabbed, poisoned, that is like a family loss. However, I agree their barking, if loud enough, will and has made robbers think twice.
A safe bolted to the floor? My neighbor had one of those. the burglers took the bolts with the safe. Now what about a home security system? Make sure it will work when they cut the electric and phone lines. Oh that same neighbor with the safe, the robbers took the security system also.
How about having it all insured? With all your info on their computers, why not just post everything you have on the internet?
The best idea noted so far is a loud dog and mostly keep your mouth shut as to what you have.
If you see any vehicals parked near your home with people just sitting in them, call the police. Nothing to loose and possibly a robbery not performed. Don't have gun, knife, coin, stamp, etc magazines sticking out of your mail box. Don't even order them if they do not come in a enclosed, unmarked package. Not everyone in the post office is a 100% honest person you know.
There are numerous methods to ward off crime if you really think about it.

Let's be smart about it....I think what I said should be pretty obvious but some people think a dog is the end all to be all for home security and it's not. And obviously a tiger is not immune to a bullet.

I think the best advice I have seen is to "keep your mouth shut as to what you have".

I don't think there is anyone here who thinks a dog is an "end all for home security". It's a start and a commonly recommended one.

I have a sign on my property and it says never mine the Dog but beware of owner. I sleep with a gun under my pillow and won't like any intruders or to be rudely awaken.
