So I found this in my nickels and trying to figure it out. There's a 3-4mm channel running from the top left to the bottom center with a crack that runs on the right side of the channel. The crack is below the rim at the top but ends at the bottom with a chunk missing, anyone seen this before?

Thanks John1

ok so I looked up lamination and I'm seeing its a type of error that occurs at the mint? What about that missing piece is this a result of the same lamination? Anyone know how this occurs?

Lamination is where layers of metal alloy start to peel apart. Nickel is one of the hardest metals to create a perfect alloy for rolling out sheets. In sheet form, nickel may look fine, however the planchet cutting and die stamping will sometimes show some layering of metal. Laminations can occur on type of coin, but most frequently seen on nickels.

The missing piece may have been part of the upper layer, breaking off after coining.

The notch below the braid appears to be PMD, it is too neat and angular to be part of the delamination seen on the rest of the hair.

hmmm thats weird the missing piece is the exact width of the lamination and so small it has less width than 2 numbers in the date!

The dies we're very worn, especially San Francisco.....

There could of been a chunk of metal in the spot married to the die, and it left a void in the rim ....

quality and control where not words widely used with Buffalos!

My 1921-S has a lamination issue too, although not to quite the same extent. At first I thought it was a scratch, but those who know better than I educated me on lamination errors. I was very grateful. CCF is a great place to learn.
