Dear All,

I'm new to this forum and have posted a welcome post. From this you will see that my main interest is medals, but I also have an interest in coins and have a very small collection that I'd like to develop.

These are largely Roman, and in most cases I've been able to identify them from books and web sites, but I'm struggling with the coin posted here and was wondering if anybody could help.

I think it's a late coin, and an AE4 due to its size, but I've been unable to identify the head.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Johnnie

Just thought I'd also add the reverse.

As an aside, the diameter of the coin is approximately 10mm.

You coin appears to be a Late Roman Bronze (LRB), but I can't make out enough detail to say who it is. Hopefully one of the others will be able to help.

Style is in line with one of Constantine's boys, but I have never seen a genuine issue with such large eyes, nor do I recall seeing anything smaller than about 12mm from them. My money is on a contemporary "barbarous" issue.

Many thanks for that. I have to admit that it was the eye that had me stumped. I've been trawling websites and books and couldn't find anything with such a pronounced eye.

As an aside. The coin below, I have been told, came out of the same area.

This is a larger coin being c.16mm diameter and seemed to have traces of silvering surviving. However, the very neat edge looked more like a milled coin to me.

The coin is also rather thin and I just feel that it is more recent and more likely post-medieval.

Any thoughts would be great.

Johnnie

That one is an official Roman issue, but I can't tell who or which type. All coins of the Constantine and Valentinian dynasties used more or less the same portrait, with just as much variety between different mints of the same emperor as there was between different emperors.

That said, my gut says Valens, but I couldn't back that up without an inscription.

And unfortunately, what you are seeing is most likely not silvering, but rather mineral deposits or verdigris. A much higher degree of preservation is needed for any original silver wash to remain.

That's great. Many thanks for that. Just goes to show how little I know. I was sure the edge was too neat and perfect.

Would the size of this make it an AE3?
