Looking through some cents from a friend and found this 1996 the red in United and the word states are really fat compared to a regular 1996 the letters are not mushed like on some reverses I uploaded a pic of the reverse in question and a normal reverse both are 1996p

Sorry my camera isn't the best but the letters in question are alot bigger than the normal ones

Could be just a worn out die. This was near the beginning of the single squezze method of coin minting. The dies were cone shape(tapered in) Thus making the areas in the center prone to doubling. This is the time period we start seeing lots of Class 9 doubled dies in the memorial itself. I am not seeing anything that jumps out as doubling on the letters in question. If there was, you would expect to also see seperation lines and notching as well.
