Opinions needed if this is real or fake. After searching and looking at other $2.50 gold Indian head coins, this coin appears to shiny. Does it appear to have been altered?

Real, but polished. Worth around $200 on a good day.

What does the reverse look like? I agree it appears genuine and polished (obverse only of course). AU Details - Polished.

Definitely polished, may have spent some time in a bezel as part of a necklace.

No indicators of anything other than a real Indian that got polished fairly heavily. Probably actually removed some of the detail in doing so. Now in the AU, details, range. Not a great deal of numismatic value over melt price.

Genuine, but heavily polished. Here is raw one I have in my raw, "Capital Plastics" set of Indian quarter eagles to give you an idea of how an unmolested one should look.

And notice that almost ALL 1914-D (if not ALL) have the appearance of being in a bezel in the past. There is an indentation close to the rim on both sides. This is normal on the 1914-D, and some 1910 have it as well. Does not mean they were ever in a bezel.

I suggested possible ex-jewelry due to the pocky-look on the surfaces, which is usually due to wear/sweat/skin oils accumulated from frequent contact with skin, particularly in a necklace mount.

Good note, jwitten.
Certainly polished, possibly lacquered.

Your coin is Ex-Jewelry (pattern of marks). Obviously polished so v. difficult to authenticate without micrographs of specific areas. Finally, I'll bet the edge will show that a mount was removed...note the obverse rim at 12.)
