Quote: The recent rash of counterfeit coins in PCGS and NGC slabs does not exactly mean that just because a coin is in a real PCGS/NGC holder that it is a real coin. True Quote: I'm not sorry I strongly questioned this coin's authenticity. When you see poorly focused pictures like this that are turned at a 90 degree angle, it's very prudent to assume that the seller is up to something. All of these photographic shenanigans are methods that those who market counterfeits use to disorient the viewer. Believe it or not, my thoughts exactly. This hobby has gotten to the point where you have to treat every coin with such suspicion. Quote: I don't give them the benefit of the doubt anymore. The worst was a plugged and overplated 1872-S dollar. It looked unusually shiny, like it had been polished, with soft details. The plating came off in a frying pan. The coin wasn't a fake but if I had believed it was I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. I only give coins the benefit of the doubt if I am not 100% sure it is counterfeit. If it unsettles me even a little bit, I just won't buy it. This coin is one of them. The moral of your story seems to be more "don't buy problem coins" than a sure way of Counterfeit Detection.

Oh, I agree with everyone that questioned the authenticity, as I did too. I guess this was the point of my post.
I am not sure any counterfeiter would counterfeit a scratched non-gradeable coin in a counterfeit PCGS holder. So I suspect this coin is indeed genuine.
I guess there is someone, somewhere that will buy that coin, but it would not be me.

@billjones, I think that you are buying it in the modern holder. It was probably slabbed to justify the exorbitant price. The raw coin pictures look like they were taken with an old iPhone.
I remember seeing a badly worn and damaged bust silver dollar in a junk coin bin back in the 90's. I should have purchased it instead of that 1872-s...or neither...

Given the sketchy look of the initial photos of the coin, it's no surprise that most everyone questioned its authenticity. I know that I would never purchase a coin based on crappy photos like that.

Nothing wrong with badly worn and damaged Bust coins for me. I'll take all the "junk" Bust coins you don't want :)

Quote:Have a look at this one. I think fake, but there are already 2 bidders who think otherwise. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coin-1-USA-...252323445988 There's actually only one bidder, but he must like this fake so well that he has decided to bid twice. From the images, it looks like you could peel back the metal and find a delicious piece of chocolate inside.

If the "1799" dollar is real, I'll eat it with the foil still covering the candy. That is a very bad copy of the real thing.
