1882 Netherlands 1 Cent With Die Crack On The Date

turtlefoot Valued Member United States 182 Posts	Posted 03/19/2016 8:10 pm When I saw this coin, I thought that it was the 1882/1 variety, but now I think that it is a die crack. Is anyone else familiar with this variety? Does this die crack add anything to the value of this coin as it is a fairly low value coin to begin with. Thank you for any information. Dies were comparatively more expensive to produce at this period in time, and so were used until the dies failed. That makes die crack coins of this period relatively more common. qxy Valued Member Netherlands 74 Posts	Posted 03/21/2016 06:37 am The Dutch catalogues I have don't have a 1882/1881 variety, but they do mention that there is a 1882 variety with die crack resembling a '1'. Once something is in a catalogue, some people will feel that they need to have the variety to be complete, and will be willing to pay a bit more for it. Considering the low value of the coin it's not one you see much at auctions, but one Dutch auction house had six pieces in their 2008 auction (http://npv.nl/nl/veiling/muntenveil...e-helft-2008, lot 117-122), of which three with the die crack. The die crack ones went for 50% more than the normal ones. Report this Post to the Staff
