After spending an entire day trying to figure where these coins are from, if they're authentic or any info at all, I'm giving up and here to request some help. I am guessing based on the level of detail and quality, that they're replicas, but I'd nonetheless love some other opinions and info. Thank you, Bill  |

 to the community Two very nice coins. I believe the first one is Ptolemy IV Philopator, sorry but I don't have a reference number for it. |

for the first coin , can we have pics of the edge on the obverse between 1 and 3 h , and on the reverse between 5 and 7 h ,I think it is the same part of the edge as the die axe in 3 h in my opinion .
for the second coin , let s hope it is a real one with a value between $20.000/30.000 or more .Can we have the sizes and more pics ? albert

The Spartan Tetradrachms are extremely rare, I would be quite surprised if this was a genuine coin as these are mostly in museums. The others were sold as part of BCDs sales. The Bode has a few which I've seen with the photo below of the type the coin is meant to be:   Your coin is much higher grade than this example which is quite suspicious. The style is also a bit cartoony compared to the attached photo. Where was the coin sourced from? |

Given coin #1's possible connection to Bulgaria (if we assume a die match with the esty.com coin...and the reverse legends, at least, do seem a match), and also considering how impressive Bill's coins are, I begin to wonder - and this is just speculation here - if both may be from Slavey dies. They are certainly high-end from an artistic standpoint.
For those who may not be familiar, Slavey Petrov of Bulgaria is one of the most skillful copiers of ancient coins. He was born in 1951, produces impressive modern dies of ancients, and is entirely open about what he does. (I am assuming he's still alive)
Even if not by Slavey, they may be of the so-called "Bulgarian School" of fakes. The "School" consists of Slavey's former students. As Wayne Sayles states in his "Classical Deception" book, "The whole region has, it seems, taken a fancy to die-engraving."

Hi from Berkely CA. I was given a handful of coins, cleaned them and want to see what they are. Sure I am interested in value but I have a History Masters in Greco-Roman. I have no intention of selling any of these. Their historical value is much greater (unless one wants to pay my student loans). So just on here for info. Who knows perhaps I will spy something I know of and be able to add to the forum. Got this web-page when I bought a bunch of Julio-Cladian coins. To my surprise using Meter's book I confirmed most of these so now I am really hooked. Thanks for the help and support.
